One unlucky bird stepping in the wrong place caused a weekend power outage in Morganton. The outage left hundreds of customers without power, but city of Morganton electric linemen were able to restore power to a majority of customers in just over an hour.

Saturday’s outage was caused by a bird landing on a power pole behind Jake’s Restaurant in downtown Morganton at 4:48 p.m., Electric Department Director Brooks Kirby said. The bird likely landed on an exposed line on top of a power pole and then also touched a ground line creating a short circuit and a huge spike in electrical current known as a fault.
