With Buffalo Wild Wings set to open next month, another new addition to the Morganton Heights Shopping Center already is in the works.
City of Morganton Development and Design Services Director Phillip Lookadoo said the city has received plans from T-Mobile to fill space in the same new building on the Buffalo Wild Wings outparcel, which is next to Sam’s Xpress Car Wash.
“Adjacent to Buffalo Wild Wings, there are three tenant spaces,” Lookadoo said. “The one that is the outside wall that’s closest to Sam’s Car Wash — we have upfit plans for that and that will be a T-Mobile store. That is the only (other) thing we have plans on (for that building).
“In my experience, I really don’t count anything as definite until we’ve issued a permit and they’re working. But we do have plans submitted for T-Mobile.”
Compared to the rest of the shopping center, the building that will house T-Mobile, Buffalo Wild Wings and potentially two other tenants is unique. While the lower buildings around the outside and in the middle of the shopping center vary between being either standalone — like Wal-Mart or Staples — or housing multiple businesses, the other existing upper outparcels — the car wash, Applebee’s, Golden Corral and Blue Ridge Urgent Care — all are single-business buildings.
“This is kind of a separate shopping center within the shopping center,” Lookadoo said. “It’s almost like the building where Jersey Mike’s is, but on a smaller scale. This one just happens to have frontage on (Fleming Drive).”
Requests to T-Mobile for additional information, including an opening date for the store, were unfulfilled as of press time. T-Mobile already has locations in Hickory and Marion.
On its website, the wireless company promotes itself as the “Un-carrier,” saying it is “redefining the way consumers and businesses buy wireless services through leading product and service innovation.” The carrier is based in Bellevue, Washington. It has a nationwide 4G LTE network that services 72.6 million customers. T-Mobile has approximately 50,000 employees.
