The first day of candidate filing for the 2020 election set a Republican primary in motion for three county commissioner seats.

Incumbent Republican Burke County Commissioners Johnnie Carswell, Jeff Brittain and Scott Mulwee filed for re-election on Monday. Former Burke County Manager Ron Lewis, a Republican, also filed to run for a board of commissioners seat.

Three commissioner seats are up for election in 2020. The 2020 primary elections in the state will be held March 3.

For those who file for election but then change their mind, the deadline to withdraw a notice of candidacy is Dec. 17.

Also filing for re-election on Monday was incumbent Republican Stephanie Norman for Burke County Register of Deeds.

And Republican Hugh Blackwell filed for re-election to the District 86 seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

On Tuesday, the only local candidate who filed was Warren Daniel, the Republican incumbent for N.C. State Senate District 46.

While county elections officials were told last week that U.S. congressional candidates in the state would not be able to file, three judges in the state changed that with their decision on Monday.

In Harper v. Lewis, a three-judge panel of the Wake County Superior Court previously postponed filing for congressional districts only. The panel Monday lifted its injunction and ruled that North Carolina’s 2020 congressional elections would take place under maps approved by the N.C. General Assembly in mid-November, said the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

Candidate filing ends at noon Dec. 20.
