Beatrice Cobb, former publisher of The News Herald, is still investing in her beloved community decades after her death.

The trustees of the Beatrice Cobb Trust have announced this year’s disbursements to selected churches and charitable groups. The trust was set up in 1969 to fund 19 local organizations. It also designates a portion of the proceeds to be given to a few additional groups at the trustees’ discretion.

The trust, which gained $41,843 from last year, will award a total of $412,590 to the groups this year.

Trustees Scott Whisnant, Steve Gregory and Jack Weir are pleased to announce the following disbursements from the trust:

Annual recipients:

» First United Methodist Church: $61,664.

» UNC School of Journalism: $61,664.

» Junior Order Children’s Home: $41,108.

» Christmas Cheer Fund: $20,554.

» Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge: $20,554.

» Greensboro College: $20,554.

» City of Morganton: $20,554.

» UNC Greensboro: $20,554.

» Gaston Chapel AME Church: $12,333.

» Calvary Lutheran Church: $12,333.

» First Baptist Church of Morganton: $12,333.

» First Presbyterian Church of Morganton: $12,333.

» Glasgow Presbyterian Church: $12,333.

» Grace Episcopal Church: $12,333.

» Crossnore School and Children’s Home: $12,333.

» Morganton Parks and Recreation Foundation: $12,333.

» Burke County Public Library: $12,333.

» Morganton Woman’s Club: $14,078.

» Slades Chapel AME Church: $12,333.

Discretionary recipients:

» North Carolina School of Science and Math: $2,000.

» Good Samaritan Clinic: $1,500.

» History Museum of Burke County: $1,500.

» Meeting Place Mission: $992.

» Burke Arts Council: $992.

» Burke United Christian Ministries: $992.

Recipients are asked to pick up their checks between 1-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at the Beatrice Cobb Trust office at 102 Collett St., Morganton. Checks also can be mailed upon request by calling Steve Gregory at 828-438-7083.
