Police were on the scene after a woman was hit in the Morganton Heights Shopping Center parking lot in front of Walmart.

A woman was taken to a local hospital after a car hit her in the Walmart parking lot at Morganton Heights Shopping Center early Friday afternoon.

The woman, who is 80 years old, was pushing a shopping cart of groceries through the parking lot while a car was being driven in the parking aisle, said Officer T. Paterno with Morganton Department of Public Safety.

When another driver wanted to back out of a parking spot, the driver in the aisle backed up to take the spot and hit the woman in the process at around 12:23 p.m., Paterno said.

The woman was transported to Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge-Morganton for complaints of head and leg pain, Paterno said. She was alert and conscious when police arrived.

Gene Vecchio, 71, of Bristol Creek Avenue, was driving the car that hit the woman. Paterno said Vecchio was cited for a safe-movement violation.

Paterno arrived at the scene 20 seconds after the call was dispatched, he said. Burke County EMS also assisted, along with MDPS.
