Inclement weather will be sending Burke County Public Schools students home early Thursday.

Schools will be dismissing at noon Thursday, according to a post on the BCPS Facebook page.

The school system explained that the dismissal time will give bus drivers time to get back to the schools to pick up students plus allow students an opportunity to eat a hot meal before heading home for the day.

"Remember, parents always have the right to check their students out at any time," the Facebook post said. "Stay safe."

The early dismissal comes after the county was placed under a flash flood watch until midnight Friday, and a flood advisory until 3:15 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop throughout Thursday, and some of those storms may become strong to severe with damaging wind gusts and cloud-to-ground lightning, the NWS said.

There's also a potential of a few brief, isolated tornadoes, especially along and southeast of Interstate 85, the NWS said in its hazardous weather outlook Thursday.
