Check out these events taking place around Burke County this week (July 7-13):

Sunday

Valdese Lakeside Park group walk

The Friends of the Valdese Rec will host a group walk down the 1.3 mile natural greenway along the lake and creek at Valdese Lakeside Park at 2 p.m. starting in the grassy field at the end of Lake Rhodhiss Drive in Valdese. The walk will include a free watermelon social in the new Kellex picnic area. Dogs on a leash are welcome.

State park program

South Mountains State Park will offer a fly-fishing workshop at 2 p.m. in its visitors’ center.

Monday

Wellness workshop

Rita Hawthorne-Runnels, RN-C, CHHP, drugless practitioner, will present a free wellness workshop at 5:30 p.m. at the East Burke Senior Center in Hildebran.

Community birthday party

Members of the community are invited to wish Annie J. Caldwell a happy 103rd birthday from 2-4 p.m. at AJs Family Steakhouse at 101 Bost Road in Morganton.

Low-cost spay and neuter clinic

The Brother Wolf Animal Rescue will offer a low-cost spay and neuter clinic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Morganton Tractor Supply Company at 111 Independence Blvd. Male cats are $50, female cats are $55, male dogs are $60 and female dogs are $65. State park program

Lake James State Park will offer a summertime boat tour at 9:45 a.m. starting at the Paddy’s Creek Area East Picnic Shelter. Those interested in attending must RSVP by contacting the park office at 828-584-7728.

Seniors Night Out

The Burke County Senior Center will facilitate a Seniors Night Out at 5:30 p.m. at Judge’s Riverside BBQ in Morganton. Cost of the meal and transportation is each person’s responsibility. Those interested in attending must RSVP by contacting the center at 828-430-4147.

Wednesday

Seniors crafting workshop

The Burke County Senior Center will offer a free Christmas-themed crafting workshop for seniors at 1 p.m. Those interested in attending must RSVP by contacting the center at 828-430-4147.

Canning workshop

The Burke County Senior Center will offer a canning workshop at 11 a.m., taught by a representative from the North Carolina Cooperative Extension – Burke County Center. Those interested in attending must RSVP by contacting the center at 828-430-4147.

Juvenile Crime Prevention meeting

The Burke County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council will meet at 8:10 a.m. at the Collett Street Recreation Center. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, contact AJ Coutu at 828-403-1427.

Lake James State Park will offer a program on snakes at 9 a.m. in the basement classroom in the Catawba River Area.

Thursday

Lake James State Park will offer a program about watersheds at 10 a.m. in the basement classroom in the Catawba River Area.

Friday, July 12

Concert

Belle Farm at 3851 Kathy Road in Morganton, will welcome the classic rock band Southwind, who will perform a concert there from 7-9 p.m., rain or shine. Visitors are instructed to bring lawn chairs. Concessions will be available for purchase. Donations will be received for the band.

Watermelon Festival

The Burke County Senior Center will present a Watermelon Festival at 1 p.m. for area seniors. The event will include free watermelon and games.

State park program

Lake James State Park will offer a program celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with an astronomy celebration at 7:30 p.m. in the East Picnic Shelter of the Paddy’s Creek Area. Those interested in attending must RSVP by contacting the park office at 828-584-7728.

Saturday, July 13

South Mountains State Park will offer a star-gazing party from 8:30-10 p.m. starting in its visitors’ center.
