Wycoff family reunion
The descendants of Pierce and Mira Wycoff will meet at 1:15 p.m. at Central Baptist Church in Hildebran. Family members should bring food and beverages to share. Ice and paper products will be provided. For more information, contact Rita Smith at 828-874-0280.
State park program
South Mountains State Park will offer a fly-fishing course at 2 p.m. in its visitors’ center.
Veterans’ art workshop
The Burke County Senior Center will host a veterans’ art workshop at 2:30 p.m. Veterans are invited to bring their own art supplies and projects to work on in a social setting.
Substance abuse workshop
The CARE Foundation of Western North Carolina will host a free workshop called “Substance Use and Misuse in Our Community” from 6-7:30 p.m. at Summit Community Church at 407 S. Green St. in Morganton. Speakers will include Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant; Wendi Craven-Barber, retired Burke County Public Schools administrator; Kim James, executive director of Burke Recovery; and Brandi Greer, also representing Burke Recovery. The Burke County Democratic Party will meet from 6-8 p.m. at its headquarters at 310 S. Sterling St. in Morganton. Those who attend should bring a covered-dish to share.
Caregivers’ support group meeting
The PACT caregivers support group will meet from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Burke County Senior Center. The meeting will include a free meal and informative program on an issue related to caregiving. Those planning to attend must RSVP by contacting the center at 828-430-4147.
Mental health training
The Burke County Senior Center, in partnership with the Vaya Health Geriatric and Adult Mental Health Specialty Team, will offer a free workshop on the topics, “Suicide Indicators, Response and Prevention,” from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and “Crisis Prevention: Keeping Your Cool Under Pressure,” from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the center. The workshop is designed for individuals, agency staff serving older adults, caregivers and anyone interested in learning about issue affecting mental health. Wilderness EMS film screening
The Carolina Wilderness EMS Externship will screen the film, “The Revenant” at 6:30 p.m. in Room 163 at the Foothills Higher Education Center. Bottomless popcorn and Cheerwine will be served. A wilderness medicine roundtable discussion will follow the film, led by local wilderness medicine experts.
WWII-Korean Era Veterans meeting
The WWII-Korean Era Veterans group will meet at 10 a.m. on the lower level of the Burke County Senior Center. All veterans from those eras are invited to meet and discuss a variety of subjects.
Medicare 101 workshop
The Burke County Senior Center will offer a free Medicare workshop at 1 p.m. The workshop will cover what Medicare is, what it covers and what parts an individual may need. Those interested in attending should RSVP by contacting the center at 828-430-4147.
The North Carolina Cooperative Extension – Burke County Center will offer a class on canning spiced apple rings from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at its facility at 130 Ammons Drive in Morganton. Cost is $10. Class size is limited, so those would like to participate must register in advance by contacting the center at 828-764-9480.
The board of directors of New Dimensions Charter School will meet at 4 p.m. in the Wilkerson Auditorium.
Sen. Sam Ervin Jr. Dinner
The Burke County Democratic Party will hold its 34 th annual Sen. Sam Ervin Jr. Dinner from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Morganton Community House. Justice Anita Earls from the North Carolina Supreme Court will be the guest speaker. To purchase tickets for the dinner, contact the BCDP at 828-475-6198 or stop by the BCDP headquarters at 310 S. Mosteller/Shuford family reunion
The 20 th annual Mosteller/Shuford family reunion will take place at 1 p.m. in the Family Life Center at Hildebran First Baptist Church. Doors will open at noon. Participants are asked to bring picnic meals.
Library book sale
The Friends of the Burke County Public Library will hold its fall book sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Collett Street Recreation Center. A bag sale will take place from 12:30-2 p.m. in which shoppers may fill a bag with books for $5. A sale for Friends members only will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, but non-members may join at the door. Individual memberships are $10.
State park program
South Mountains State Park will offer a tree ID hike at 11 a.m. starting at the Jacob Fork parking area.
