The man charged with the murder of two children and their mother is now facing more charges after a special grand jury session on Tuesday, according to an Alexander County Sheriff’s Office press release.

According to previous Hickory Daily Record reports, brother and sister Angel Pacheco, 11, and America Pacheco, 12, were found dead in their burned home early on June 16. Their mother, Maria Calderon, was run over, killed and taken to the Catawba River near Riverbend Park. Police have not located her body.

Areli Aguirre-Avilez, who police say is connected to the family’s deaths, is now charged with a count of statutory rape of a child 15 years old or younger, a count of violation of domestic violence order with a deadly weapon and first-degree arson.

It is unclear what the rape charge stems from.

Avilez and his 16-year-old girlfriend Heidi Darlene Wolfe of Wilkesboro were originally charged on June 17 with three counts each of first-degree murder.

No charges were added for Wolfe.
