CONNELLY SPRINGS — Police are investigating a robbery at a Dollar General in the southern end of Burke County on Wednesday morning.
Deputies were dispatched at 7:38 a.m. to the Dollar General on N.C. 18 South near George Hildebran School Road, said Sheriff Steve Whisenant.
A store employee told deputies a man who was about 6-feet-4-inches tall followed her in, got into the safe, took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran out the back door, Whisenant said. The suspect left the scene in a gray car, he said.
Investigators still are working to determine if the suspect was armed, Whisenant said.
Detectives from BCSO still were at the scene around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“We’ve got the crime scene roped off looking for evidence that would help lead us to the perpetrator,” Whisenant said.
While stores in rural locations are convenient for shoppers, they can be difficult for law enforcement to reach in a timely manner.
“The locations of these stores make them prime targets for robberies,” Whisenant said. “I think they’re very lucrative in that they meet the public where they are, but as law enforcement officers we are concerned when you have a store in rural areas.”
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact BCSO at 828-438-5500 or Morganton-Burke Crimestoppers at 828-437-3333.
