A woman who apparently was a treasurer of a nonprofit has been charged with embezzling from the organization.

Mychel Pendley Hefner, 39, of 2593 Orders Drive in Morganton, was charged with felony embezzlement less than $100,000, according to a release from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives received a package from the International Cesarean Network stating that Hef-ner, who was the nonprofit organization’s treasurer, had been misusing funds. The organization provided items showing that about $26,119 had been taken, the release said.

According to a copy of the arrest warrant, the embezzlement took place from Aug. 16, 2016, to Oct. 21, 2019.

Detectives interviewed Hef-ner, who admitted that she had been misusing the funds and had attempted to pay back some of them, the release said.

Hefner told detectives she also had admitted this to the organization’s board of directors and told it that she would pay back the funds, the release said.

Hefner was given a written promise to appear and had her first court date Wednesday, the release said.

ICAN is a nonprofit organization with a mission “to improve maternal-child health by reducing preventable cesareans through education, supporting cesarean recovery, and advocating for vaginal birth after cesarean,” the release said.
