Mountain View Elementary School offers students entering kindergarten a voluntary, dual-language immersion experience called the Global Immersion Academy.
Through the program, students learn the standard course of study in English and Spanish and learn content while learning the two languages.
The students spend half of their day learning in English and the other half learning in Spanish from highly qualified teachers.
Goals of the dual-language program are biliteracy, bilingualism, grade level academic achievement and cross cultural competence.
Students who enter the language immersion program in kindergarten are eligible to continue in the academy through the fifth grade.
In preparation for the school year, Burke County Public Schools will hold a session on the Global Immersion Academy from 5:30-7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, at Mountain View, 805 Bouchelle St., Morganton.
Applications will be accepted between Feb. 10 and April 3 for the third cohort of the Global Immersion Academy for the 2020-21 school year. Students from outside the Mountain View district are eligible to apply.
Students are selected on a first-come, first-served basis, and students with siblings currently in the program are given priority in the selection process.
Priority also is given to students who reside in Burke County. For applications received after April 3, students will be placed on the waiting list in the order received. All students must enroll at the school in their home district in addition to completing the application.
Regardless of admittance into the program, every child will be required to enroll in their home school district. Students admitted to the program must meet kindergarten eligibility requirements.
