VALDESE — About seven months after 30-year-old Englishman Peter Skelton announced his intentions to open a pub in downtown Valdese, The Levee is ready to open for business.
The brewery and pub’s Facebook page on Friday shared a photo with approved temporary permits from the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission for brewing, malt beverage wholesale and on-premises malt beverage sales.
Attached to the post was the message that the business will open this week, and the town of Valdese’s Facebook page shared the post, as well.
In recent weeks, The Levee’s Facebook page has shared information about passed inspections, completed renovations and cleaning projects to the building at 118 Main St. W. in the old Hefner Real Estate building.
In April, Skelton told The News Herald that by starting the business, he was seeking to fill the void of a brewery and pub in Valdese, which he said is “the center of everyone’s social community” in England.
Skelton said in the spring he will use a three-barrel system to brew English-style cask-conditioned beers. Cask-conditioned beers are unfiltered, unpasteurized and served without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure.
Skelton also said at that time he plans to have a few IPAs on tap, as well as something on the lighter spectrum.
The Levee will offer primarily “beer-flavored beer,” Skelton said. He has been working on the recipes for about five years.
Skelton worked as a pharmaceutical scientist for 11 years and brewed beer on the side since he moved to the United States. One day, Skelton realized he wasn’t really doing science anymore and that his job was becoming more about managing people.
He eventually convinced himself to break away from that role and to make his pub and hangout spot a reality. Skelton said he plans to offer live music a few times each month, darts, board games and a private room for special events and meetings.
Other tentative ideas he has for the pub are parents-only movie nights, poker nights and opportunities for homebrewers to make batches using his brewing system.
