A Lincoln County principal was charged after police say he assaulted a child last week.
Patrick Mitchell Nelson, 43, of 3rd Steet N.E. in Hickory, was charged with misdemeanor assault on a child under 12 years old on Tuesday, according to a release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
The charge came after LCSO investigated a report that a student at Union Elementary had been assaulted by the principal, the release said.
Detectives determined that while a student was in the principal’s office to address behavioral concerns, the student fled the office and ran into the hallway, the release said. The principal then grabbed the student by the back of the shirt collar, causing the student to fall on the floor, before the student was dragged back into the doorway of the principal’s office, the release said.
Nelson was issued a $500 unsecured bond, the release said. His next court date is set for Jan. 4, according to the North Carolina Judicial Branch website.
