Maurice Springs appears in front of a Burke County district court judge Monday morning.

A man had his first court appearance Monday morning after being charged with murder in the death of an 8-week-old baby.

Maurice Dashawn Springs, 23, of 3104 Bedford Ave., was charged with second-degree murder without regard for human life Friday, according to a previous News Herald article.

Search warrants filed indicated the mother left the baby at home with his biological father so she could run some errands. When she came home, the father was on the bed in their bedroom and the child was in a glider, pale and unresponsive.

Springs appeared in court Monday and was assigned Jared Amos as his court appointed attorney by District Court Judge Robert A. Mullinax.

Deputies first responded to Carolinas HealthCare System-Blue Ridge on Sept. 4 for reports of an unresponsive infant who was taken to the emergency room by his parents, the release said. The baby was transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital where he died on Sept. 9.

Springs’ and the baby’s family declined to comment at court Monday morning.

Springs is being held under no bond. His next court date was set for Oct. 7.
