A Morganton man was charged with murder in the death of an 8-week-old baby.
Maurice DaShawn Springs, 23, of 3104 Bedford Ave., was charged with second-degree murder without regard for human life, according to a release from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies first responded to Carolinas HealthCare System-Blue Ridge on Sept. 4 for reports of an unresponsive infant who was taken to the emergency room by his parents, the release said. The baby was transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital where he died on Sept. 9.
Search warrants filed said the mother left the baby at home with the baby’s biological father. When she came home, the father was on the bed in their bedroom and the child was in a glider, pale and unresponsive.
BCSO and Burke County Department of Social Services launched an investigation into the child’s death, and charged Springs after interviews were conducted, the release said.
Springs nodded when reporters asked if he loved his son as he was walked into the magistrate’s office at the Burke County Courthouse on Friday. He shook his head no when asked if he killed the baby.
Search warrants filed in the case indicated the baby had a traumatic brain injury from shaken baby syndrome.
Springs was held on no bond with a first court appearance set for Monday, the release said.
