HILDEBRAN — A Hildebran man has been charged after police say he stole a check from a home where he was working and cashed it at his bank.

Ian Adrian Ward, 47, of 8997 Bridges Ave. in Hildebran, was charged with felony obtaining property by false pretenses, uttering forged instrument and forgery of endorsement, according to a release from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

BCSO received a report of check being stolen from a home on Piedmont Road in Morganton, the release said. The victim reported that the check had been deposited into Ward’s account at the State Employees Credit Union in Rutherford College.

The victim said Ward had been doing work in the home and had access to the checks at that time, according to the release.

Detectives obtained footage of Ward depositing the stolen check into his account using an ATM at the bank, the release said.

When detectives interviewed Ward, he confessed to taking the check and to taking two other checks from a home he was working on in Caldwell County, the release said.

Ward had a court date set for Friday and his bond was set at $15,000 secured, the release said.
