Police are investigating after an unresponsive infant was taken to a local hospital and later died.
The 2-month-old male infant was taken to Carolinas HealthCare System-Blue Ridge by his parents on Sept. 4, according to a release from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. The baby was unresponsive and transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
The baby died Monday, the release said.
An investigation was initiated by BCSO and Burke County Department of Social Services after reports from emergency department staff at CHS-Blue Ridge and staff at Levine Children’s Hospital, the release said.
Several witnesses have been interviewed, and investigators have met with the Child Protection Team at Levine Children’s Hospital, the release said.
The infant’s death still is under investigation and the case will be presented to the district attorney’s office once the investigation is finished, the release said.
