A former Morganton city councilman was among those who filed to run for a seat on the first day of election filing on Friday.
Larry Whisnant filed for Morganton City Council District 2, which Forrest Fleming currently holds. Fleming told The News Herald on Friday that he doesn’t plan to run for city council again. Fleming has served on the board since 2007, according to biographic information on the city website and former News Herald stories.
Whisnant served on the Morganton City Council for 16 years but went off the board in 2011 because he moved out of his district, according to previous News Herald stories. That year, he chose not to run for re-election because it meant running against fellow board member Fleming, according to previous News Herald stories. In 2011, he told the newspaper that he wasn’t ruling out running for a council seat in the future.
In addition to Whisnant, incumbent councilman Sidney Simmons filed for re-election for the District 1 seat and incumbent Mayor Ronnie Thompson filed for re-election, according to information from the Burke County Board of Elections.
And Matthew Church filed for a seat on the Hildebran Town Council.
In the races for Burke County Board of Education seats up for election, incumbents Randy Burns filed for re-election for the Eastern District and Edna Weller filed for re-election for the Western District but she faces opposition already.
Kelvin Beam Sr. also filed on Friday for the Western District of the Burke County Board of Education, according to information from the elections office.
Candidate filing ends at noon Friday, July 19.
