Two people are in ICU and one person has been flown to a Charlotte hospital after a shooting and stabbing Friday morning.
An altercation apparently took place at 118 Lenoir Road in Morganton, leading one man to be shot, another to be shot and stabbed and a woman to be stabbed, said Maj. Ryan Lander with the Morganton Department of Public Safety.
Kristen Jewel Ellis, 25, of 7860 Deerfarm Road, Morganton, was the woman who was stabbed. Richard Hidalgo, 25, of 188 Lenoir Road, and Ezra Patton, 22, of 5543 White Oaks Drive in Morganton, were the men who were shot, Lander said.
The 911 call came in at 10:41 a.m., with a man telling dispatchers he had been shot multiple times, Lander said. That man was found at the Lenoir Road address.
Ellis was driving a car that led police on a high-speed chase away from the Lenoir Road scene, eventually coming to a stop on Amherst Road. The passenger in that car was a man with stab wounds and a gunshot wound, Lander said.
During the chase, a weapon was thrown out of the car window, Lander said. A witness stood by with the weapon until police could come get it.
Lander confirmed two young children were inside the residence at the time of the shooting, but were picked up by a relative.
Investigators still are trying to piece together what happened, but they are no stranger to the Lenoir Road address or to Hidalgo and Patton.
In March, police were called to the address for a shots fired call. Hidalgo was at the home, as well as a woman and juvenile, when they heard a loud noise they thought was a firearm, according to a previous News Herald article.
During that call, five bullet holes were found at the home, the article said.
Just three months before that incident, Hidalgo was charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied property on Rockyford Street. According to another News Herald article, police said Hidalgo was shooting at the car his ex-girlfriend was driving, which had two children inside, but hit another man’s house instead.
When Hidalgo was arrested on those charges, he and the gun used were found inside 118 Lenoir Road, the article said.
Patton also has a criminal history. In January, he received multiple drug charges, including possession of a schedule I controlled substance with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, according to a previous News Herald article.
Neighbors told The News Herald there’s often traffic going to and from the house, no matter the time of day, but the violence still was shocking to them.
“We’ve lived here for 40 years and we’ve never had any problems,” said Edna Patrick.
She said she heard the shots from the March shooting.
“But it’s been quiet up there since that happened,” Patrick said. “We’ve not seen any unusual activity or anything suspicious.”
Her main concern was for the children, who she said she’s seen walking up and down the road quite a bit with their family.
“It’s really unsettling with those children there,” Patrick said. “I hope they don’t get traumatized from it.”
MDPS fire and police, Drexel Police, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Triple Community Fire Department and Burke EMS all responded to the call. The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation has been called to help with the investigation.
More information will be published as it becomes available.
