Authorities have identified a man who died after he hit a car on his moped and was run over by another car Wednesday morning.
Kevin Roger Huffman, 57, of Hildebran, was killed after two separate crashes around 6:35 a.m., according to information from Master Trooper J.S. Swagger with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The initial crash happened at around 6:35 a.m. when a moped driving east on Old N.C. 10 near Interstate 40 ran a red light. Huffman’s moped hit a Chevrolet Equinox that was turning from the I-40 westbound off-ramp, Swagger said. Huffman was thrown, and a witness called 911 and worked with another witness to help Huffman, Swagger said.
Before emergency personnel arrived and a couple of minutes after witnesses started helping the moped driver, a Toyota 4Runner headed east on Old N.C. 10 hit Huffman, who was still in the road, Swagger said. The bystanders were able to jump out of the way, he said.
The street was not lighted and it was dark with a light fog in the area at the time of the crash, Swagger said. The driver of the 4Runner had a green light.
Troopers will turn their investigation over to District Attorney Scott Reilly’s office. No update was available on any possible charges, Swagger said.
More information will be published as it becomes available.
