LGBTQ supporters celebrated the diversity of the city as downtown Morganton held Progressive Pride Day on Saturday.

The event was “a community-based day of partnering businesses who have chosen to display rainbow flags in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ people of Burke County and beyond,” according to the Progressive Pride Day Facebook event page.

More than 30 businesses pledged to fly the flags, and a small number of other businesses hosted events throughout the day, according to Jamie Hall, president of Foothills Pride. Wisdom Path Counseling and Wellness Services held a “Soul Collage workshop” and The Burke County Democratic Party and LGBTQ Democrats of North Carolina held the “LGBTQ Democrats Informational Luncheon,” at the Burke County Democratic Party establishment. Adventure Bound Books held a “Reading with Pride Story time” event, featuring an LGBTQIA+ author display and Homer’s close the event with the sold-out “MoTown Drag Show Fundraiser,” featuring area performers from Asheville. The drag show event sold out in less than five days, Hall said.
