VALDESE Mary Sue Smart "Dolly" Cook of Valdese, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and aunt, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019, following a period of declining health. Mary was born Sept. 29, 1944, in Burke County, a daughter to the late Rev. John and Ethel Powell Smart. She enjoyed traveling, arts and crafts, and was a member of the Burke County Quilting Guild. She worked at Alba Waldensian, Drexel Heritage, and retired from Hexion. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jimmie Smart and Richard Smart. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, David P. Cook, of the home; sons, Dean Alan Cook and wife, Dolores, of Canby, Ore., and Todd Eric Cook and wife, Christina, of Rutherford College; grandsons, Russell and Randall Cook of Canby, Ore.; siblings, John Billy Smart of Icard, Doris Jean Smart Suttles of Morganton, Nancy Smart Mitchem and husband, Harold, of Granite Falls, Patti Smart Woods and husband, Wayne, of Morganton, and Linda Joyce Smart Ethridge and husband, Johnny, of Valdese. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 15, at Solid Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Stacy Layne officiating. Interment will follow in the Solid Rock Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends today (Wednesday, Aug. 14), from 5 to 7 p.m., at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Solid Rock Baptist Church, 2505 Burke Memorial Park Rd., Morganton, NC 28655; to Lakeview Baptist Church, 4744 Lakeview Acres Rd., Valdese, NC 28690; or to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
