It is hard to believe that summer is almost over and 354 students will come back to New Dimensions Charter School on Tuesday, Sept. 3. I do hope our students have spent time with their families, enjoyed their summer vacation, and are excited to come back to school to experience another year of learning.

New Dimensions is a North Carolina Public Charter School. Many of you may wonder “What is a public charter school?” Charter schools are public schools of choice that are authorized by the State Board of Education and operated by independent nonprofit boards of directors. State and local tax dollars are the primary funding sources for charter schools, which have open enrollment and cannot discriminate in admissions, associate with any religion or religious group or charge tuition. Charter schools operate with freedom from many of the regulations that govern district schools, but charter schools are held accountable through the state assessment and accountability system.

What makes New Dimensions special?

» Established in 2001, New Dimensions today enrolls approximately 350 K-8 students. Our school provides parents the choice to have their child(ren) in the same school from kindergarten through eighth grade.

» New Dimensions relocated to the former Shadowline manufacturing facility on 29 beautiful acres bordering the Catawba River.

» New Dimensions offers small class sizes and the strong Core Knowledge Curriculum

» Music, Art, Computers/Technology, Spanish, and Physical Education are offered -- kindergarten through eighth grade -- further enriching our curriculum and developing a broad base of knowledge

» New Dimensions empowers students to make positive choices about themselves, each other, and our environment, producing respectful, responsible, safe, kind and good learners.

» Quality communication between teachers and families boosts each student’s success.

» The uniform policy creates a positive environment where the focus is on learning.

» Middle school electives include: band, music, art, physical education and health and technology.

» Athletics include: indoor/outdoor soccer, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country and flag football.

I want to take this time to thank our entire community for their support of our school and each student we serve. I am especially grateful to the faculty and staff for what they have done to make me feel welcome and to prepare for another school year. We just finished New Teacher Orientation for six new teachers where we shared with them the philosophy of New Dimensions, provided them suggestions on how to become a master teacher, and gave them an opportunity to prepare their classrooms for their students. We are very excited about our new teachers and believe they will help us continue making a positive difference in the lives of students.

Our school is very appreciative of the BRIDGE crew for their work around our campus. The crew did an excellent job making our school look great for the first day of school.

I encourage each student to set as goals this year to make this the best year they have ever had, to work hard, and to get involved in their school. I also appreciate the way our students represent our school and encourage them to continue to take the lessons they have learned at home, in the faith community, and at school to be good citizens in our community. It is always encouraging to hear the positive stories of how New Dimensions students make a difference in our community and in the lives of others.

Our major goals this year focus on students and their success. One important goal this year for New Dimensions is to make our school a true community school. We believe that our school should be the center of our community in regard to activities, sports, gatherings, events -- you name it. We want to open our school up for our community’s use. We also want our parents to feel comfortable visiting our school, involving themselves in the programs offered, and knowing the teachers and staff.

Another goal is to create a learning environment where students can be successful. New Dimensions cares about each child. We will continue a collaborative, cooperative working relationship between the school, the parents, the businesses/industries and the community. When we set a goal to help students achieve success, and we expect our school to provide opportunities for success, then all of our students benefit.

My hope and prayer is that this school year will be the best ever for our school and for each student we serve. The successes we will achieve this year will be due to dedicated people, positive attitudes and the support of our entire school community. My door is always open and I welcome your calls, emails or visits. I want to know how our school can better serve our students.

I am looking forward to the new school year and working with you to provide each of our students the best education possible.
