TULSA, Okla. — The 34th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals dirt midget car race now is underway with a multitude of NASCAR stars (along with IndyCar, Formula 1 and ARCA, including competitors from six different countries) on the 357-driver entry list.

The action began Monday with practice in the morning and the first round of heat races in the evening.

NASCAR drivers entered in the event are Kyle Larson, Ryan Newman, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Christopher Bell, J.J. Yeley, Justin Allgaier and Chase Briscoe.

Bell is the three-time defending champion of the event. Rico Abreu, who won the event back-to-back from 2015-16, also is in this year’s field.

Gilliland tabbed for truck ride with Front Row

MOORESVILLE — Front Row Motorsports on Monday announced its expansion into the NASCAR Gander Truck Series, naming Todd Gilliland as the driver of its new No. 38 Ford F-150. The team will be fielded in conjunction with DGR-Crosley, owned by Gilliland’s father, David.

Todd Gilliland has 48 truck series starts on his resume, all with Kyle Busch Racing over the past three seasons including fulltime efforts the last two years. He claimed his first truck win last fall at Martinsville. David Gilliland drove a No. 38 Ford in the Cup Series for FRM between 2010-15, including a second-place finish at Talladega in 2013. He drove the No. 38 Ford for Robert Yates Racing from 2006-08, earning two top-fives and the 2007 Daytona 500 pole.

Butch Gilliland, Todd’s grandfather and David’s father, also ran a No. 38 Ford in the Cup Series in a trio of races at Sonoma between 1995-99.

Van Wieringen tops final day of ARCA testing

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Dominique Van Wieringen topped the leaderboard in the final day of preseason testing for the ARCA Menards Series at Daytona over the weekend. Though rain was an issue, teams were able to get nearly 15 hours of on-track time over two days.

Van Wieringen piloted her No. 30 Rette-Jones Racing Ford to a fast lap of 181.397 miles per hour. David Gravel (181.236 mph) in KBR Development’s No. 28 Chevrolet was second fastest and Sean Corr (181.174 mph) finished testing in third in Empire Racing’s No. 8A Chevrolet.

The season-opening Lucas Oil 200 at Daytona is on Saturday, Feb. 8.
