BOONE — Charlie Harbison has been named Appalachian State's associate head coach, head football coach Eliah Drinkwitz announced Monday.
Harbison, a Shelby native who played at Crest High and then Gardner-Webb University, joined the Mountaineers' staff as the cornerbacks coach earlier this year.
He spent the 2018 season as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals under fellow App State grad Steve Wilks and helped Arizona rank fourth in the NFL in fewest passing yards allowed per game.
In 26 seasons as a college coach, Harbison was part of teams that combined for 20 bowl appearances, including the BCS National Championship Game, two Orange Bowls, two Sugar Bowls and two Cotton Bowls.

CULLOWHEE — Western Carolina’s Justice Bigbie and Andrew Bullock have both been named to rosters for the 25th annual Northwoods League All-Star Game, which is slated for, July 16 in Waterloo, Iowa.
Bigbie, one of the midseason favorites to garner the league’s top player honors at summer’s end, ranks among the league leaders in many statistical categories in batting average (.346).
His eight home runs — including a pair of grand slams — are tied for second in the league while his 13 doubles are third, two behind Bullock, who leads the league. Bigbie also has a league-leading 40 RBI entering weekend play.
Bigbie is a rising Catamounts junior, while Bullock will be a senior next spring.
