MARION — Former Avery County football coach Darrell Brewer has been named the new head coach at McDowell.
Brewer takes over for Andy Morgan, who stepped down May 17 after going 11-24 in three years at the helm. Brewer’s hiring was confirmed by the McDowell County Board of Education at Monday’s meeting.
Brewer was head coach at Avery from 2004-2015, and compiled a 68-71 record during that span. He led the Vikings to the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs each year, and Avery advanced to the third round twice.
In 2005, Brewer’s Vikings went 11-3, won the Western Highlands Conference championship and set a school record for wins in a season. He was a Shrine Bowl assistant in 2014 and was also an assistant in the East-West All-Star Game.
The Titans were 4-8 last year and advanced to the 4A playoffs. McDowell has only two winning seasons in the last 18 years.
