AVIGNON, France — In his first season with the overseas pro basketball club, Donald Rutherford recently helped guide US Avignon Pontet Basket to a second-place finish in the French LNB Pro NM2 league.
It was the eighth overseas pro season for the 6-foot-6 Freedom High (2005) and Catawba College (2010) alum who has also played professionally in Denmark, Israel and the Dominican Republic. He was a two-time all-star in Denmark’s Canal Digital Ligaen and played a key part in Aix Maurienne Savoie Basket’s French LNB Pro NM1 league in 2016.
Prior to this season, Rutherford had taken a year off. He signed with US Avignon Pontet Basket in September 2018. His season statistics were not available.
“I wanted to take time to thank my coach, François Sence, for presenting me with an opportunity to further my pro career this past season and having faith in me and my abilities,” Rutherford posted on Facebook this week.
“All in all, minus us falling short against a good team in Dax (in the title game), we had a pretty good year. … I’m excited I’ll be bigger, better, stronger and faster now that I have a full summer to dedicate 100 percent of my focus to.”
