East Burke boys basketball sophomore guard Christian Smith is The News Herald’s Farm Bureau high school county athlete of the week for games played Jan. 6-11.

Smith averaged a team-high 13.0 points per game in 2-0 week for the Cavaliers, who eclipsed last year’s win total in the process and moved above .500 in conference play this late in the season for the first time since 2015-16.

His 18 points on Tuesday at home versus Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference foe Foard were a career-high. He scored 11 in the first half, including three 3-pointers. Then on Friday against Draughn, Smith, who played for the Wildcats last winter as a freshman, made a key basket late as part of an eight-point effort as East Burke put away its second win over its chief rival in as many seasons.

The News Herald will award an athlete of the week for all sports throughout the year.
