Freedom football senior quarterback Jayden Birchfield and Patton volleyball junior outside hitter Ella Gragg are The News Herald’s Farm Bureau high school county co-athletes of the week for games played Aug. 26-31.

In a 60-14 win over Draughn on Friday, Birchfield threw a new county record six touchdowns and tied his own record from last fall with seven total touchdowns. In just a half of play, Birchfield finished 12 of 17 passing for 316 yards with a rushing touchdown. He distributed three TD passes to Desmond Caldwell and two to Damien Dula.

Gragg started the week with back-to-back double-doubles, then went off for season-highs of 38 kills and eight aces with six digs in a five-set win Thursday versus R-S Central. She had 26 kills, 10 digs and six aces Monday in a four-set road win over East Rutherford and 16 kills, 10 digs, four aces and two blocks in Tuesday’s sweep of South Caldwell.

The News Herald will award an athlete of the week for all sports throughout the year.
