LINCOLNTON — The Draughn volleyball team cruised Thursday for the second consecutive match to open the season, defeating host West Lincoln 25-11, 25-10, 25-11 in nonconference play.
The Lady Wildcats (2-0) were led by Kirsten Powell’s 13 kills, Chloe Gary’s eight assists, Haygen Sigmon’s four aces and Georgia Goulding’s three blocks. Gary and Bailey Bryant both added four kills, and Goulding and Sara Walker both had two kills.
The Draughn JV squad also won in straight sets Thursday, 25-17, 25-17.
McDowell 3, Patton 1
The Lady Panthers (2-1) dropped their first match of the year Thursday at home, 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 15-25, as the Titans avenged a Tuesday loss in Marion.
Patton was led statistically by Izora Gragg (37 assists, 10 digs, five kills, two aces), Ella Gragg (26 kills, nine digs, block), Kenady Roper (25 digs, three aces, four kills, five assists) and Ashlyn Castle (five aces, six kills). PHS’ Christina Skelly added six kills and three digs and Sara Burnette had five digs.
The JV Panthers improved to 2-1 with a 25-21, 25-22 win. Kinley Attaway had six assists, Meredith Kearson had five digs and Leah Haithcock four kills. Attaway, Kearson and Sydney Morgan each posted two aces.
E. Rutherford 3, Freedom 1
The Lady Patriots (0-1) fell Thursday to open the season in Forest City, 20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 17-25. The Freedom JVs also lost, 23-25, 17-25. No more details were available.
Patton 20, N. Buncombe 12
The JV Panthers (1-0) opened the season with a home triumph Thursday as DeShawn Cantrell-Vasquez and Jerry Sarath rushed for touchdowns, with Sarath adding a two-point conversion carry. Patton’s Trevor Smith returned an interception for a TD as well.
The Freedom boys soccer team’s home game with East Rutherford was postponed Thursday due to rain. No makeup date has yet been announced.
