LENOIR — The East Burke varsity volleyball team collected its fourth consecutive win Monday at Hibriten, 25-9, 25-5, 25-19, to set up a big first-place showdown today at Foard.

The Lady Cavaliers (9-1, 4-1 Northwestern Foothills 2A Conf.) were led statistically by Erica Clontz’s 12 kills, Graleigh Hildebran’s nine assists and eight kills and Sara Suddreth’s nine assists and one ace in the victory.

EB also claimed the JV match, 25-13, 25-11, behind Jordan Newton’s seven assists and three aces and Aubree Grigg’s four kills.


Foard 3, Draughn 0

The host Lady Wildcats (8-3, 3-2 NWFAC) had a chance to climb into a tie for first in the league with Foard on Monday but ultimately fell short in straight sets.

Draughn started out strong in the first set, looking to gain momentum, but couldn’t overcome a big rally by Foard and ultimately fell 25-13. The hosts fell by identical 25-15 scores in the final two sets. Individual statistics were not available.

St. Stephens at Freedom

The Lady Patriots (2-5, 1-2 Northwestern 3A/4A Conf.) hosted St. Stephens on Monday. No details were available at presstime.



EB 7, Hibriten 2

The Lady Cavaliers (4-0, 2-0 NWFAC) remained perfect Monday in Lenoir, taking five of six singles matches and two of three in doubles.

EB’s singles wins came via No. 1 Erin Carico (6-3, ret.), No. 2 Paige Houston (6-1, ret.), No. 3 Emily Rector (6-2, 6-2), No. 5 Daisy Jantes (6-2, 6-2) and No. 6 Jaden Ramsey (6-0, 6-0). In doubles, Jantes/Ramsey won 8-1 at No. 2 and Aubrie Snyder/Taylor Bostain won 8-1 at No. 3.


Foard 9, Draughn 0

The Lady Wildcats (3-3, 1-1 NWFAC) stumbled Monday in Valdese. Abby Parker (No. 2 singles) and Haley Lowman (No. 3) both claimed a team-high eight games, with Lowman falling 10-7 in a third-set tiebreaker. In doubles, No. 3 Katie Cozort/Regan Winkler played the day’s closest match, an 8-5 loss.


Alexander Central 6, Freedom 3

The Lady Patriots (2-2, 0-2 NWC) fell Monday at Freedom Park despite singles wins via No. 1 Savannah Vandergriff (6-4, 6-2) and No. 2 Lee Kania (6-4, 6-3) as well as a No. 1 doubles triumph by Vandergriff/Blaikley Crooks (8-6).



St. Stephens 3, Freedom 1

The Patriots’ Grayson Ward (assisted by Kevin Vasquez) tied things up Monday in the teams’ league opener at the Catawba River Soccer Complex before the Indians found the back of the net twice in the final 20 minutes.

Freedom (6-3-1, 0-1 NWC) got three saves on the night by goalkeeper Cole Johnson.


Hibriten 4, EB 0

The visiting Cavaliers (2-5-1, 0-1 NWFAC) allowed a pair of goals in both halves as they dropped their league opener Monday. EB keeper David Benitez had five saves in defeat. EB played to a 1-1 JV tie behind Ian Cox’ goal, assisted by Landon Thorne.


Foard 9, Draughn 0

The Wildcats (0-3, 0-1 NWFAC) lost via mercy rule Monday at home. No more details were available.



Freedom 2nd at NWC match

The Lady Patriots (137) were edged by McDowell (135) for the first time this season on Monday at Orchard Hills despite junior Christina Fisher’s fourth straight medalist honor as she shot 41. Albany Bock added a 46 for Freedom and Anna Czarkowski shot 50. Freedom leads McDowell by 18 shots in the season-long team standings.
