MARION — Despite 26 scoreless minutes to open the contest, the Patton varsity boys soccer team blanked McDowell 7-0 in nonconference play Monday on the road to start the 2019 regular season.

Patton sprung for three goals in the final 13 minutes of the first half to pull away for good. The Panthers’ Jesse Stapleton finished with two goals and one assist, and Carter Freeman also scored twice while Will Mejia had one goal and one assist.

Eliseo Ramirez and Daniel Ramirez also scored once apiece, and Jonatan Batz (two), Andres Mateo and Destin Joseph added assists. Keeper Ethan Vue recorded the shutout in goal.

“We got outstanding defensive play from Joseph, Mateo, Erick Velasquez, Vance Jones and Luis Batz,” said Patton coach Keith Scott.

Patton outshot McDowell by a 21-1 margin and had all six corner kicks in the game. The Panthers visit rival Freedom on Wednesday.

 

VOLLEYBALL

EB 3, W. Lincoln 0

The Lady Cavaliers opened the season with a 25-16, 25-10, 25-17 straight-set nonconference triumph Monday in Lincolnton. East Burke was led statistically by Graleigh Hildebran (14 assists, 10 digs, three kills), Erica Clontz (eight kills), Riley Haas (six kills), Dani Foxx (five kills) and Erin Newton (eight assists, four kills).

EB also took the season-opening JV matchup earlier in the day, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8, led by Aubree Grigg (eight kills, two blocks), Jordan Newton (eight assists, four aces) and Gabby Wingate (five digs, three kills).

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Freedom opens season

Freedom opened the 2019 season Saturday in Boone at Watauga’s Clash of the Classes meet. The Patriots had eight runners finish inside the top 40 in their respective races, led by Joseph Hover’s eighth-place result (12:02) in the sophomore boys race.

The others included Emma Brooks (senior girls; 17th), Ava Thomas (junior girls; 22nd), Scout Conrad (freshman girls; 27th), Jeulenea Khang (freshman girls; 28th), McKenna Carver (freshman girls; 30th), Zachary Laibinis (senior boys; 31st) and Harlan Hallette (junior boys, 39th).

 

POSTPONEMENT

The EB boys soccer team’s season opener at North Lincoln was moved from Monday to Tuesday.
