MARION — Trailing 2-1, the Patton volleyball team rallied to claim the final two sets and come away with a season-opening nonconference victory Tuesday at McDowell, 25-14, 20-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-12.

The Lady Panthers (1-0) were led statistically by junior Ella Gragg’s 26 kills and nine digs, sophomore Kenady Roper’s 25 digs, four kills and three aces and freshman Izora Gragg’s 37 assists, five kills and two aces. Ashlyn Castle added six kills and five aces, Christina Skelly had six kills and a block and Sara Burnette contributed five digs.

The Patton JV squad fell in two sets despite eight aces, seven assists, five kills and two digs by Kinley Attaway and five kills by Hayley Caraway.


EB 3, S. Caldwell 0

The Lady Cavaliers completed a 2-0 opening week on the road with Tuesday’s 25-16, 25-13, 25-23 win in Sawmills. Ashlyn Stilwell led East Burke with 13 digs, Erica Clontz posted eight kills and four digs, Riley Haas added six kills and four blocks and Alex Lowman finished with five kills.

The JV Lady Cavs also moved to 2-0 after a narrow 25-19- 20-25, 16-14 triumph. EB was led by Catherine Hammack’s 11 digs, Claire Cook’s five assists and four aces and Aubree Grigg’s three kills.

The Lady Wildcats opened the season Tuesday in Newland. No details were available.



N. Lincoln 4, EB 3

The Cavaliers (0-1) were edged Tuesday in Pumpkin Center despite a goal apiece by Micah Chrisco, Antony Salgado (assist) and Antony Thao. EB goalkeeper David Benitez had five saves. EB also dropped the JV contest, 1-0, as keeper Marco Benitez kept things close throughout with six saves.
