CLAREMONT — The first-place East Burke JV boys basketball team took a 13-7 advantage after one period Friday at Bunker Hill and led the rest of the way in a ninth consecutive victory, 49-33.

The balanced JV Cavaliers (10-4, 8-0 Northwestern Foothills 2A Conf.) were led by three players in double figures as Ian Cox scored a team-high 14 points, Jadon Cooke added 12 and Carter Crump had 10.


Freedom 62, St. Stephens 33

The JV Patriots (13-1, 6-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conf.) trailed 9-6 at the end of the first quarter but surged ahead by 12 at the half and by 20 after three quarters Friday in Hickory as they bounced back from Tuesday’s first loss. Drew Costello led Freedom with 15 points and Mekhi Harris added 10. Twelve of the 13 FHS players scored.


Patton 36, W. Iredell 27

The host JV Panthers (3-14, 3-5 NWFAC) led by seven early Friday, but the gap was whittled to two after three quarters before Patton drained 11 of 16 free throws in the fourth to preserve the win. Lansing Butler scored 15 points as the lone player in double figures for Patton.


Hibriten 53, Draughn 47

The host JV Wildcats (9-5, 6-2 NWFAC) led 35-31 after three quarters but stumbled down the stretch, 22-12, and couldn’t recover late Friday in Valdese. Elijah Pritchard (12 points) and Luke Rector (11) led the way for Draughn in defeat.



EB 45, Bunker Hill 36

The JV Lady Cavaliers (9-3, 5-1 NWFAC) needed a 21-7 final period to escape Claremont with a victory Friday and stay tied atop the league. Jordan Newton scored eight of her team-leading 10 points for EB in the fourth, while teammates Dixie Leatherman and Alaze McDowell scored nine apiece.


Patton 50, W. Iredell 28

The host JV Lady Panthers (8-5, 5-1 NWFAC) avenged their lone league loss in a big way Friday, outscoring the Warriors 27-9 after halftime. Haven Duckworth drilled four 3-pointers and led Patton with 18 points, and Sydney Gonzales and Kelsey Powell chipped in 14 each.


Draughn 49, Hibriten 18

Leads of 10-1 after a quarter and 23-4 by halftime were all the JV Lady Wildcats (3-7, 2-4 NWFAC) needed to dispatch the visitors in a 31-point win Friday. Alexis Diaz (19 points, five 3s) and Katie Cozort (16) led the charge for Draughn.
