ASHEVILLE — Burke County golfers Sam Mace and Carson Witherspoon both won their age divisions at the Tarheel Youth Golf Association’s (TYGA) one-day tournament at the Country Club of Asheville on Thursday.
Witherspoon (boys 16-18 flight), a recent Patton High graduate, carded a 3-over par round of 74 to win by one, offsetting four bogeys with one birdie on the 6,648-yard layout. In the same division, Morganton’s Travis Watson shot 91 and finished 16th.
Mace (boys 14-15 flight) shot a 5-over 76. He birdied back-to-back holes en route to a front-nine 34 to highlight his day.
In the girls 16-18 flight, Morganton natives Christina Fisher (87) and Albany Bock (89) finished second and third. Fisher had won the TYGA’s Dan Dobson Jr. Open at Mimosa Hills Golf Club two days earlier.
