ICARD — Start times and opponents were recently announced for the 10th annual Burke County Jamboree high school football scrimmage event, which will be hosted by East Burke at Danny Williams Field on Aug. 16.
All four county schools will face teams they have never before scrimmaged in the event. Draughn vs. Bandys starts the action at 5 p.m. in the return to Burke County for former Patton coach Tom Eanes. That is followed by Patton vs. Madison at 6:05 p.m., Freedom vs. Lake Norman at 7:10 and EB vs. R-S Central at 8:15.
Bandys has appeared in the event only in 2013 and R-S only in 2018; Madison and Lake Norman have never participated before.
All four matchups will be one-hour game situation periods, according to EBHS athletic director Jim Childers, and will give teams a chance to test out the new 40-second play clock which was added this season.
Other county scrimmages prior to the jamboree which have already been announced include: R-S at Draughn (Aug. 10; 10 a.m.), Freedom at Newton-Conover (Aug. 10; 6 p.m., also vs. Forestview), Draughn at Chase (Aug. 13; time TBA), North Wilkes at EB (Aug. 13; 6 p.m.) and Patton at the five-team Avery County Jamboree (Aug. 13; 5 p.m.).
8 local athletes off to Powerade State Games in soccer, lax
CHARLOTTE — Complete rosters for the annual Powerade State Games were announced this week, and eight total Burke County athletes will be competing in either girls soccer or boys lacrosse.
In lacrosse, Patton will be represented by Will Evans and Ryan Shehan (class of 2020) as well as Nick Corn, Austin Ingram, Max Short and Ben Stroud (class of 2021). The rising junior game between the East and West will be June 18 at 8 p.m. at the Championship Field at Queens University Sports Complex, and the rising senior game will be June 19 at the same time and site. Shehan and Ingram were both named All-Conference 16 this spring.
In soccer, Freedom rising senior Riley Carswell and Draughn rising junior Haley Lowman will compete for the West squad on June 22-23 at the same site as lacrosse. The team will play three games in the round-robin tournament. Both local players were named all-conference and all-region this season.
Patton 2nd in final NWFAC Wells Fargo Cup standings
CHAPEL HILL — The NCHSAA, in conjunction with Wells Fargo, this week announced the final standings in the Wells Fargo Cup conference competitions for the 2018-2019 sports season.
Led by a second-place finish in girls track and three third-place spring finishes, Patton finished second in the Northwestern Foothills 2A Conference (692.5 points), the highest mark of any county school. Foard (840) won the league, with Draughn (672.5) third and East Burke (592.5) sixth.
Freedom (190.5) was fourth in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. Watauga (210) was first.
Post 21 jr. legion softball wins twice to open season
CATAWBA — The Burke County Post 21 Junior American Legion Lady Fastpitch softball team defeated host Hickory Post 48 twice on Tuesday night in a season-opening doubleheader at Bandys High.
The games were postponed due to rain Monday and played 24 hours later; final scores and individual statistics were not available.
