Patton volleyball freshman setter Izora Gragg and football senior tailback Jackson Vance are The News Herald’s Farm Bureau high school county co-athletes of the week for Oct. 7-12.
Vance rushed for a career-high 220 yards and tallied first two varsity touchdowns on the ground Friday in a 49-21 home win over East Burke.
His 35-yard score shortly after halftime was a game-changer, putting the Panthers up 28-7 just four plays after EB had recovered an onside kick to open the second half, driven across midfield and threatened to make it a one-score game. Vance also recovered a fumble on defense.
Gragg finished with 39 assists and 11 digs in a double-double Monday in a 3-1 payback home win over West Iredell. She then dished out 13 assists Wednesday in a 3-0 win over West Caldwell and had 33 assists Thursday in a 3-0 win at rival Freedom.
Gragg also had five digs, four kills and three blocks on week. The Lady Panthers, winners of a season-high six straight matches, broke the single-season program wins record last week and are now 16-5 overall.
The News Herald will award an athlete of the week for all sports throughout the year.
