The Burke County Post 21 Junior American Legion Lady Fastpitch softball team returned to action Monday night at Catawba Meadows Park Field No. 4 following a weeklong holiday break.
Visiting McDowell Post 56 got the upper hand in both five-inning matchups, 13-0 and 8-7, with Post 21 dropping game two despite a late four-run rally.
Grace Hammack (first-inning double) and Mikhayla Lingafelt (fifth-inning single) recorded the only hits for Post 21 (5-5) in game one, with Maddison Powell adding a first-inning walk.
Trailing 8-3 entering the final half-inning in game two, Tristen Juarez (double) and Madilynn Taylor (single) led off with hits before the next two Post 21 batters struck out.
Laney Billings gave the team new life, driving in both Juarez and Taylor before she and Katie Cozort came across home plate off a Hammack single. The rally ended there however, with the potential tying run on base.
Hammack and Katie Lail (run in second) each added a triple in the nightcap with Lingafelt and Juarez scoring second-inning runs.
Lingafelt pitched a complete game in the opener and also relieved Destiny White (4 IP) in the circle late in game two.
