FOREST CITY — The Valdese Torpedo dominated a three-team Tarheel Swim League meet Tuesday, winning 47 of the 83 events to accumulate 492 points to McDowell’s 287 and host Forest City’s 201.

“(The meet) went really well. We didn't have a huge group go down, but I felt like we were in pretty good shape,” Valdese coach David Andersen said. “We were thin in several age groups, but those that came really swam well.

“There are still some things we're going to keep working on during the week until the championship meet, but there has been some real progress since we started in late May. It's going to be a long week, but I'm hopeful all the hard work will pay off.”

Valdese collected wins in 10 relays: the girls 8U 100 free and 9-10, 11-12 and 15-18 200 free; boys 8U 100 free and 13-14 200 free; girls 8U 100 medley and 9-10 and 15-18 200 medley; and boys 13-14 200 medley.

Individually, Jaxon Smith continued a spectacular summer with four events wins, taking the 200 free before winning the boys 15-18 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly.

Three other Torpedo swimmers, all in the 13-14 age group, won three events each: Gigi Smith (girls 50 free, 100 fly, 100 breast), Sarah Mull (girls 200 IM, 100 back, 100 free) and Jacob Jensen (boys 200 IM, 100 free, 100 breast).
